Tech Tip

Back Up Beforehand

Before installing new software or upgrading your operating system, back up your computer files. This ensures protection of your data if the software installation goes awry or causes compatibility issues.

Gmail Encryption

If you use Gmail, protect the contents of your messages by turning on the encryption feature. Under settings, select “Always use https” and then save your changes.

Power Down

Power down your work computer before you leave your desk each day. This helps to prevent unauthorized access to passwords that are stored in your browser.

Avoid "Cramming"

If your phone bill includes charges for calls you did not receive or services you did not sign up for, this is a scam called "cramming." Fight back by reading your monthly statement thoroughly and refusing to pay any unauthorized charges.

Protect Wireless Networks

Protect your home wireless network by enabling the Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) or WiFi Protected Access (WPA) settings on your wireless router. This provides data encryption protection.

Laptop Lookout

When you use wireless Internet access in public, make sure to hold on to your laptop at all times -- particularly in airport lounges, cafes, and hotels. The most common type of theft associated with public Wi-Fi areas is the theft of laptops.

No Personal Messages

Never send personal instant messages to friends and family from your work computer. Most employers have a policy barring personal IMs at the office.

Safe Online Purchases

When making purchases online, try to use a third-party payment service such as PayPal or Amazon Payments because they offer increased protection for your credit card.

Never Disclose Password

If you get an email asking you to divulge an online account password, be suspicious. Any email that asks for your password or tells you to go to a website to confirm your password might be part of a scam called "phishing."

Website Nicknames

To protect your personal information, when a website asks you or your child to personalize the content on the site, use an online nickname instead of your actual name.
