Expert Q & A

I sometimes surf the Internet at my workstation, and I'm afraid I might get more spam at work as a result. What can I do to keep from getting spam?

There are two tactics to take in beating spam -- block spam before it reaches you, and keep your email address off the spammers’ lists. Once spam is on its way to you, it’s not too late to use technology to stop it. If your company hasn’t put an anti-spam filter or firewall in place, it should, suggests Dave Jevans, of the Anti-Phishing Working Group, an industry association dedicated to fighting email fraud and identity theft. To avoid spam, Jevans advises: never respond to spam solicitations, don't click on links in spam, don't unsubscribe unless the spam is from a company you trust, and don't post your full email address on any web site, blog or newsgroup or in online ads. Spammers have robot programs that visit millions of web sites a day, harvesting email addresses. Choose an address that's harder to guess -- for example bob@company.com is easy for a spammer to guess but Bob194@company.com is a bit tougher. Of course the easy way to avoid it entirely, is to never use your work email address for personal matters, even if you are surfing the net.
