Though you can buy used computers from private parties via online classified or auction sites, you never really know what you're getting. It might be a better idea to check out major computer manufacturers' official web sites first.

For instance, on the Apple Store site look for the red "SALE" tag where you can get special deals on Macs that have been refurbished and certified by Apple. Or on Dell you can search the Dell Outlet for refurbished PCs that cost way less than the new ones. Manufacturer refurbished computers might not even be used -- they might be overstock, cancelled orders, or just previously opened packages that have since been resealed.

Also, if you can, consider buying an extended warranty or support package with your refurbished computer so you can still get solid tech support if need be.
