Expert Q & A
Expert Q & A

Instead of buying a new computer, is it safe to just add more memory to my current PC?

Well, it might be OK. It depends on what’s making your computer sluggish or outdated. Sometimes to revive your computer, it’s just a matter of updating your operating system (OS) with the latest version offered by your OS maker. However, that move might require that your PC have more memory (a.k.a. RAM) to run effectively.

So your best bet is to take your PC to a local computer store and get some expert advice. Find out if an inexpensive memory card upgrade (anywhere from $20 to $100 for a new card) is enough to modernize your computer. If yes, the store should be able to complete the upgrade while you wait. Or if you’re tech-savvy, you can buy more memory online and install it on your own.
